The Basics
The Communist Party of China was formed on July 1, 1921, in Shanghai. The party and its early leadership grew out of the May Fourth Movement of 1919, ultimately culminating in the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. Today, the Communist Party of China counts more than 85 million members.
Founding Day Traditions
You’re unlikely to see any celebration of Founding Day outside of China and there are no special customs to observe. It’s a state holiday celebrated in China with a familiar procession of public performances, military demonstrations and speeches by public officials.
When is Founding Day?
Founding Day takes place every year on July 1. There is no time off granted for Founding Day.
