China established Arbor Day in 1981 in memory of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, a promoter of forestation projects until his death on March 12, 1925. The holiday’s original resolution actually mandated that able-bodied adults plant 3-5 trees per year. Practically speaking, however, Arbor Day has yet to become the state-led mobilization of tree planting that perhaps was originally envisioned.

There’s no specific recognition of China’s Arbor Day outside of China. As would be familiar during similar holidays around the world, Arbor Day is celebrated with tree planting outings by individuals, companies and community organizations. In recent years, non-profits and government agencies have used Arbor Day as a platform to raise awareness of China’s environmental problems.
